Prostate cancer is the third leading
cause of death in men, and Alberta
Cancer Board statistics show about
one in five Albertans will develop it
in their lifetime.
Tom , executive director for the Pros-
tate Cancer Foundation, says the
Priddis Charity Classic golf tourna-
ment Bill Beattie and his wife Diane
founded and continue to support is
instrumental in creating more aware-
ness of the disease.
The charity’s funds help encourage
men to get their prostates examined
and get treatment, if necessary.
“It helps us provide better informa-
tion and support for men who are
dealing with prostate cancer,”
Kenny says.
At the institute, he adds, men can
get diagnostic results in two weeks
that would take three months in the
regular health-care system.
Beattie is also a long-time sup-
porter of the Willow Park Charity
Golf Classic, which raises funds
for causes such as Habitat for
Humanity, and he recently bought
a $60,000 handi-bus for Renfrew
Educational Services.
Beattie and his company also
donated $25,000 to the Calgary
Sun’s Sunshine Fund for the Salva-
tion Army this year.
When asked why he does all this,
Beattie replies, “Because it’s the right
thing to do.”
“A lot of these organizations only
have private funding or they can’t
necessarily get all the funding they
need from government sources.”
“Also it’s an opportunity to give back
and invest in the community.”
